We had been out all day making new friends and ministering on campus. It was dinner time and the 4 of us guys were trying to decide where to eat. I was craving a burger but most of the guys were recommending something healthier when all the sudden, one of our crew said, “Why don’t we ask the Holy Spirit? He knows where we need to eat.” Honestly, you could hear the quiet sigh from each of us other 3 guys. He was right but we were tired and ready to just relax. But, we prayed briefly, then listened. I started looking around for a sign to be highlighted by the Holy Spirit. In the distance a yellow sign caught my eye and I tried to make out the words, “Spudnut Donuts?” I said outloud. “Yes” said one of the guys, “that is where the Holy Spirit wants us to go.” The healthy crowd was now really excited and honestly, I was the same way. I agreed this was where the Holy Spirit wanted us to go but I wasn’t really interested in donuts for dinner.
As we approached the restaurant it appeared closed until we saw someone inside ordering. We walked in and they were ready to take our order. I ordered and we all stood in line trying to decide if a donut was really what we wanted. We sat down and just after we sat down a college aged guy and girl came in together. One of the guys at the table said, “Hey, what is the Holy Spirit saying about them?” One of the other guys got up and introduced himself. They started talking and while they talked the Holy Spirit downloaded a word for the young man right in to my heart. I began to share what the Holy Spirit was telling me and you could see the young man get a little excited and maybe uncomfortable. They sat down with us and for the next hour the Holy Spirit began working in their lives. The young lady admitted that she didn’t really believe in God but was intrigued by the things we were telling her about herself. We asked her if she wanted to hear God’s voice, we prayed and asked God to speak to her, and we listened. She began to share about how certain phrases jumped out of the News on the TV in the background. The combined phrases that caught her attention delivered a message of hope she desperately needed to hear. What is really amazing is that God used the TV to speak to a film major student and she knew it!
That evening when we returned to our room we shared with one of the local team members what had happened. When he heard the name of the young man he nearly jumped out of his seat. Apparently they had met the previous year and my friend had been praying for this young man to encounter Jesus. Interesting that Jesus led us to the one place that evening where the young man was going to be! That week both the young man and woman joined us for a number of get togethers and continued to encounter Jesus.
Then, in June, the young man met up with our team in Phoenix for a weekend together celebrating Jesus. He had been growing closer to Christ in the months since we last met but this weekend he took it a step further and decided to get baptized. Unfortunately I was unable to be there in person but my team was gracious enough to send me the picture you see on this post. I continue to be in touch with the young man and look forward to spending time with him in the future.
There is so much I could say about Holy Spirit, the oneness of our team with Holy Spirit and how amazing it is when He works together with us to accomplish what is on His heart. But, today, I will let the fruit of His ministry and the changed lives resonate in your heart.
